A loosely affiliated counterculture of mostly gay men seeking to “reject hetero-imitation” and redefine gay identity. The faeries began in California and have spread throughout the world over the past several decades, in tandem with the larger gay rights movement. The group challenges the commercialization and patriarchal aspects of modern gay life while celebrating pagan rituals and adapting rural living and environmentally sustainable concepts to modern technologies as part of their creative expression. Members embody fae or feminized ideals in gay men while also being fiercely independent, anti-establishmentm and community-focused.
