The militaries of the world have a variety of responses to gays, lesbians and bisexuals. While some Western military forces have now removed policies excluding sexual minority members, China still bans gays and lesbians outright, and Russia excludes all gays and lesbians during peacetime while allowing some gay men to serve during wartime. Israel is the only country in the Middle East that allows gays and lesbians to serve openly. The United States technically permits gays and lesbians to serve in the military, but only in secrecy and celibacy (a policy known as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”).
