Kinsey Scale

Named after Alfred Kinsey, a biologist who in 1947 founded the Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction at Indiana University. Kinsey’s scale represents sexual tendencies and behaviors along a continuum, with 0 being exclusively heterosexual and 6 being exclusively homosexual. His research has profoundly influenced social and cultural values, and is widely credited with introducing to mainstream society the idea that sexual identity is fluid rather than binary.

0 Exclusively heterosexual
1 Predominantly heterosexual, only incidentally homosexual
2 Predominantly heterosexual, but more than incidentally homosexual
3 Equally heterosexual and homosexual; bisexual.
4 Predominantly homosexual, but more than incidentally heterosexual
5 Predominantly homosexual, only incidentally heterosexual
6 Exclusively homosexual
